Individual Therapy in Richmond, Virginia

Go from ashamed
to empowered.

Does this sound like you?

You’re drinking or using drugs too much that you feel ashamed and guilty the next day, wondering what you said or did.

On the outside you are successful and hard-working, on the inside you feel like a complete mess and an imposter.

You feel resentful of others, and taken advantage of. You say yes to things when you really want to say no.

You are not alone.

Let’s talk about…

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy can help you unpack barriers to letting yourself be seen, heard and known, so your relationships and your life feel more true and authentic to the real you.

How does it work?

Step 1: Free Consultation Call

We begin with a complimentary consultation call to determine if I would be a suitable fit to assist you in achieving your therapeutic goals.

Step 2: 90-Minute Intake Appointment for Your First Session

During this appointment, we gather information and delve into present difficulties, personal history, background, family life, and relationship history. This initial session allows me to gain a comprehensive understanding of who you are, laying the foundation for our work together.

Step 3: 60-Minute Sessions

Subsequently, sessions will be 60 minutes in duration, continuing until we mutually agree that it is the appropriate time to conclude. Initially, most clients opt for weekly sessions to foster momentum in our work and establish rapport and trust.

Payment Details

90-Minute Intake:
$250

Standard Hourly rate:

Credit card information is saved on file in a secure electronic health record system.  Payment is collected on the date of service.

Insurance

I am an “out of network” provider, meaning that I am not in network with any insurance companies.  I can provide documentation, a “superbill”, to you if you are seeking insurance reimbursement.  To see if you have out of network benefits, you will need to contact your insurance company and ask about “out of network mental health benefits.”

The Process

Step 2: Following our call, if we decide to move forward, we'll arrange a 90-minute Intake Session where we can delve deeper into your current situation together.

Step 3: From there, we will book 60-minute sessions at a consistent frequency (typically weekly or biweekly).

I’m Alex, a licensed psychotherapist in Richmond, VA.

I strive to create a safe space to explore the messy, complicated, shadowy, parts of human existence.

After five years practicing as a licensed therapist, with a total of 13 years providing supportive services for victims/survivors of trauma, I've crafted an approach that's both warm and direct. Your voice matters deeply to me, and I'm here to gently guide you through any areas of struggle. My practice often incorporates mindfulness and meditation techniques, encouraging clients to slow down and reconnect with their emotions and physical sensations.

Together, we'll uncover how past experiences shape your current challenges, while simultaneously celebrating and nurturing the strengths you already possess to support your journey towards growth and healing.

Real life, every day client results

After working together,
past clients have…

Told their relatives that they will be spending the holidays differently this year.

Declined an invitation because they needed to take care of themselves and recharge.

Reached out for support and viewed themselves as human for needing connection… not a burden.

  • “Simply put, Alex Schrum saved my life."

“Simply put, Alex Schrum saved my life. Prior to working with her, I had worked with several different therapists but still continued to struggle with severe anxiety, depression, and overall dissatisfaction with my own life. On my very worst day, I was living with a constant pit in my stomach, intense fear of failure, and the overwhelming feeling that I was not worthy of a life of happiness. It consumed me, ultimately causing significant issues in my relationship, professional career, and general quality of life. I was desperate for a change and that's when I found Alex. After our first meeting, I knew she was the right fit for my healing journey”

  • “I felt free of judgment since day one.”

“I was struggling with grief, depression, anxiety, mom issues, body dysmorphia... You name it. Working with Alex is almost indescribable. I have felt comfortable and free of judgment since day one. I know I can feel comfortable saying anything, laughing, joking, crying... truly anything! I don't even want to think about what my life would be like if I had never met Alex! I would be more of a mess than I already was. Finding Alex and starting our work together started at a critical time in my life and it has made all the difference in the way I am able to interact with my family during some very difficult times. I am most proud of the work that came out of our EMDR sessions. I am amazed at how it helped me to see myself differently and give myself a ton of grace. I have also learned a lot about myself and how to love and accept myself.”

  • "Finding a therapist like Alex is rare."

“While there are plenty of therapists out there to choose from, finding a therapist as attuned and committed as Alex is far more rare. She is intuitive, insightful, and warm. Therapy with Alex is finally having a space in which I can be authentic and vulnerable in a way that feels safe and welcomed, even when my more shadowy or child-like parts come to session. She is always patient, encouraging, and empathetic, while also pushing me to stretch and grow each week. I truly look forward to our time together. Between sessions, keeping our therapy in mind has helped me get through some of my most difficult moments. Knowing I have her as a consistent and reliable support has made all the difference. Through my work with her, I have finally started to live my life in a more conscious, authentic way - maintaining my sobriety for almost 2 years now, choosing healthier, more fulfilling relationships, and pursuing my dream career. All things I never would have imagined to be possible for myself before our work together. With Alex, you will never doubt that she is fully committed to your care, holds your best interests in mind, and truly wants to see you grow and thrive. I couldn’t ask for a better therapist.”

  • "She knows exactly what I need in order to feel seen."

“I can confidently say (with happy tears in my eyes!), Alex has supported me to heal in ways I never knew were possible. In each session, she creates a safe and validating space to discuss what is on my mind while also challenging me to dig deeper into my emotions and thoughts. Additionally, Alex does a phenomenal job of flexing her style based on the direction each session is headed. Whether it is a vent session about the frustrations of my day to day or a deeper session focused on past traumatic experiences, she knows exactly what I need in order to open up and feel seen. I truly look forward to each session we have together knowing it will bring clarity and a sense of peace.”
